Michael Mellon admits he is going to have to set a ‘new target’ after reaching double figures on the weekend with his first senior hat-trick.
The 19-year-old is spending the 2023/24 season at League Two side Morecambe and after the striker grabbed three goals in the Shrimps’ 4-1 win on Saturday taking his tally to 10 in all competitions, Mellon confessed he has already reached his aim of double figures before Christmas.
Speaking to [burnleyfootballclub.com](file:///C:/Users/e.lee/AppData/Local/Temp/msohtmlclip1/01/clip_filelist.xml), the Scotland U21 forward reviewed his season so far on the west coast and explained the benefit of playing in the Football League.
Mellon said: “My aim originally was to get 10 by Christmas, I didn’t think I’d hit it this quick so I need to set a new target.
“It was quite surprising to be honest. The first half we got battered then within 20 seconds of the second half I scored and it just changed from there.

“I got two against Bradford a few weeks ago and I came off gutted because I hadn’t got the hat-trick and I thought it was going to be the same again on Saturday.
“But in the 88th minute we got a penalty and I finally got it, so it was quite relieving to get my first one.
The young striker added: “I’m really enjoying it here and I’m putting the ball in the back of the net whenever I get the chance to at the minute so it’s going well.
“It’s massive really. When you’re 16/17 playing up in the U21 group it’s beneficial but when you do it for a couple of years, you sort of stop getting a lot of out of it.

“So, I think it’s massive to be out on loan, playing against men and senior pros. Some of the pitches and grounds we have played at can be challenging environments too which is great to experience."
