Burnley Women are back in action this weekend and for Kirstie Levell, the visit of Rugby Borough is a chance to put right some of the wrongs from the team’s last outing.

The Clarets were beaten by Stoke City the weekend before last and, with two weeks now having passed, Levell says she is looking forward to pulling on her gloves for a competitive fixture again.

“I’m really excited to get back out there and put things right,” explained the goalkeeper.

“Since then we’ve had two weeks of training and not done anything too different.

“We’ve really been trying to put into play some of the things that we needed to do to win our previous game.

“Now we’ve corrected all that, hopefully this weekend we can get three points. We’ve prepared well for it and everybody’s ready.”

Rebecca Sawiuk’s side have conceded just nine goals in their 15 league matches to date and, prior to Stoke, had kept five straight clean sheets in all competitions.

“Stoke was very out of character for us,” Levell continued.

“I can’t remember the last time we conceded three goals and as a defensive unit we were all very disappointed with that display.

“Outside of that game we’ve been really strong this season and that’s credit to everybody for pushing each other in training, week in week out.

“If you keep clean sheets you win games. We’re professional enough and there are enough winners in this team to get back to doing just that.”

Sunday’s opponents Rugby Borough sit 5th in the Northern Premier Division of the Women’s National League and have lost just one of their last five league outings.

Although we’re yet to face each other this season, Levell says she and her teammates are well aware of the threat they’ll face at the County Ground in Leyland.

She continued: “They are a compact and defensively organised team. For us, it will be about reading what we can.

“They’ve got plenty of positive results this season but we’ll be focusing on us and doing what we do best.

“Leyland feels like home for us and we enjoy playing there. Having fans there is great and they spur us on.

“They can be our ‘12th man’ and we’ll need them for the last seven league games of the season. Hopefully, we can get as much support as we can.”

Kick-off at the Lancashire FA headquarters (PR25 2LF) is 2pm and Burnley season ticket holders are able to claim free entry by presenting their season card at the gate.

Other adults are £5, while concessions are £2.
