Fabrice Muamba sits down with a smile and says he’s grateful to be a part of Burnley Football Club.
He’s also grateful every day just to be alive.
In 2012, Fabrice was playing for Bolton Wanderers in an FA Cup match at Tottenham when he suffered a cardiac arrest. His heart stopped for 78 minutes. It’s something of a miracle he survived.
“I was very fortunate enough that I had the best medical care and staff that I could ask or wish for. There was a cardiologist [who was there as a fan], a CPR machine and an ambulance at the stadium. Everything that I needed to happen in that moment I had it there and then.
“I’m very happy to be where I am, in this stage of my life. I’m very grateful! It was the reason I was able to recover to where I am now.”

There are more than 30,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests in the UK each year, which works out to at least five every 90 minutes.
Each minute that passes without CPR reduces the chance of survival by up to 10 per cent.
This Sunday, 29th September, is World Heart Day and Fabrice wants to encourage as many people to take just fifteen minutes of their time to learn CPR: “It’s about raising awareness. Families lose their loved ones because there wasn’t a defibrillator available or didn’t know how to do CPR.
“If you saw someone having a heart attack, what would be the first thing you’d think?
“It’s important we encourage people to learn CPR and encourage people to find access to a defibrillator.
“When you find someone in that circumstance the first thing you should think is – what can I do? If you know how to do CPR – do it. If you know how to use a defibrillator – get involved and help save somebody."

To celebrate World Heart Day, Sky Bet have announced they are donating £1,000 for every goal scored in the Sky Bet EFL this weekend.
The donations are part of the Every Minute Matters Campaign, launched this year by Sky Bet in partnership with the British Heart Foundation. The ground-breaking campaign is on a mission to raise £3 million and recruit 270,000 football fans to learn CPR.
The campaign has already proved a big hit, with Sky Bet donating £500,000 to fund the vital work of the BHF and over 80,000 people learning CPR since the campaign launched.
Research commissioned by Sky Bet found that 45% of football fans lack the confidence to perform CPR. The British Heart Foundation’s online tool RevivR provides a quick and easy course for those looking to learn.
“It takes just fifteen minutes and it’s a wonderful skill to learn and can make massive life differences.”
“What Sky Bet and the British Heart Foundation are doing to encourage and help people to participate in this campaign, raise awareness and donating £1000 for every goal in the EFL this weekend will help save more and more lives. This will have a massive impact.”
