Clarets boss Vincent Kompany discusses Saturday’s pre-season friendly away at Wolves, with the Premier League hosts winning by three goals to nil
Kompany on the game:
“The lads gave it everything. We could see a bit of a different physically between the lads who have been here since the beginning [of pre-season] and the lads who have just joined.
“In the first 20 minutes, we had chances, and the only difference was that they scored two early goals with the first two chances that they had while we missed two big chances.
“Other than that, they gave it everything, and it was a good performance from the lads.
“We wanted to stretch the team to see what it’s got in its current form, and this gives us a better picture.”
Kompany on the challenge versus Wolves compared to Rochdale:
“It was exactly what I wanted. Against Rochdale, you know that you’re going to get a lot of the ball and that you’ll be able to work on some of the things you’ve worked on in training.
“Coming here, you know you’re going to be challenged and that it’s always going to be physical with a lot more quality on the pitch.
“You get to see where your team is at really early doors, which is a good opportunity for me. As I’m a new coach, everyone’s making a debut for me, even those that have been at the club for a long time.”
Kompany on what he wanted from the match vs Wolves:
“Mainly, you want the physicality out of it because we get every training session to work on the tactical side of things.
“Playing against a strong opposition, it’s two different teams that we’ve played with, they’ve got a big squad and you get to see where everyone is at.
“That was crucial for me because I haven’t been there before, and you need these sorts of games.
“It’s a little bit different than the conditions in Burnley! You can see it having an effect on some of the guys. I think the Portuguese contingency from Wolves was better equipped for that, but in the end, it’s a good group of guys.
“You can always rely on them to put in a shift and with a few tweaks here and there, I think we can have some more goal threat to hopefully compete [against teams like this].
Kompany on the 30 minutes played by the U23s:
“They’ve really done themselves proud, not just with their work rate but in moments like today by putting senior defenders in trouble. That’s all you can ask from them.
“We continue from that, and we’ll take the information to hopefully strengthen the team.”
Kompany on Shrewsbury next up and playing in front of the Burnley fans:
“It’s a good thing because you get a bit more of a real sense about playing football matches.
“We hope it’s going to be a good turn out, and that the lads should be a little further along in their development by then.”
