Following a weekend of postponed fixtures, Vincent Kompany addressed the media ahead Burnley's visit to Preston North End on Tuesday.
The Clarets boss is relishing another Lancashire derby, talks of the challenges in facing Preston who have conceded just the one goal so far this season, and reflects on the importance of squad depth.
Kompany on the Norwich postponement:
“Everyone has feelings and emotions in such a moment. I think ultimately there’s many ways to pay tribute and to show respect.
“For us definitely, it was the right thing to call off our game on Friday and I think now on Tuesday it’s a very good moment for us to be doing what we do at the same time through our craft show our respect.”
Kompany on the break since West Brom:
“There are some players who I hardly saw on the pitch yet. They were there in the squad, we had little training sessions where they were mostly part of the tactical meetings, but on the pitch, it’s been good to see and push some of the guys and to get the group to be spending a little bit of time together outside of an official fixture.”

Kompany on Preston North End:
“I’m looking forward to Preston and what was it 5,500 fans we can take with us, it’s as much something to look forward to as the fact that it’s a derby. We want to give them something to remember.
“It won’t be an easy game, it’s a team that don’t concede a lot of goals. It’s tight results in every game they’ve played. We’ve prepared, I think, in the right way for this game. They are a well organised team, disciplined, with a mix of youth and experience. They are in every game which will make it challenging.
“What tends to happen in these games is the first goal can give a big shift in the game. If they score first, then things only get harder. If we do, then something has to change on their side. The first goal will change everything.
“Teams can surprise you at times. It’s a derby, emotions play a part in derbies. We will tweak and adapt to try and give the team an edge. This game can be decided in so many ways, especially with the scores being so tight in the past.”
Kompany on the Clarets goal threats:
“The Championship is tight; you never know how games are going to go. The hardest thing to find in football is players who can score goals. Every player in our front line has the potential to score goals, I see it in training. Put them in the right situations and the ball will go in the back of the net, for sure.”

Kompany on the deadline day signings:
“Halil is a technically gifted player, he can slow the tempo of the game down to his pace and accelerate when he feels that he’s got the opportunity to go and create a goal threat. That’s a rare skill to have in tight spaces. Other than that, he’s a player with the potential to improve still and that’s what we’re banking on as well.
“Jordan is pure work rate, intensity, also good on the ball, decent amount of speed for a player in the backline.”
Kompany on Nathan Tella:
“Nathan works incredibly hard, his preparation in training sessions too not just games. He is dedicated to his profession and that’s what you see.
“Here, he has been getting consistent game time so he will continue to improve. We’re happy to have him and it’s about keeping him fit. He just needs to keep doing what he’s doing.”
Kompany on squad depth:
“I’m fortunate as a coach to work with really talented players. We’ve not lacked options in terms of bringing talented players in. We’ve had so many options to sign good players and that’s going to be important in the next transfer window as well.
“You always need big squads. For those not playing regularly, players know they have to get on with it, they have to work hard.
“When you play you don’t need much coaching, everything’s going well. When you don’t play if you still keep improving, then players can respect that and players are more patient, so that’s what we do.”
