Vincent Kompany has been able to relish the seven-day break between games ahead of Norwich City’s visit to Turf Moor on Friday night.
The Clarets chief addressed the media on Wednesday ahead of a second consecutive Friday night in front of the Sky Sports cameras discussing the Canaries test, the end of the transfer window and coming up against various types of opposition.
Kompany on a positive transfer window:
“With the amount of players we got in, we have to be happy, and now we can just focus on trying to win the next match.
“When I came to Burnley, it was the great unknown. I had an idea of where I wanted the squad to be, but I didn’t know how well we’d sit in the market and whether players would come here.
“Looking back, it was a tremendous effort to go and get players in who we can now start developing and improving. We’ve been competitive in every single game so far, so when you look at the improvements we can still make to players, it’s exciting.
“The biggest conclusion is that we’ve been able to be an attractive proposition for players and that’s not because we always offered the best financial deal to them, we didn’t. We convinced a lot to come because we have a clear pathway for them.”
Kompany on having versatile players in his squad:
“The term ‘position’ is a little bit too restrictive for me. You look at every role as a set of tasks that need to be completed, and for every role, I can tell you what they [the players] need to be.

“It doesn’t matter how old you are, if you can complete the tasks, then you can change position and do it successfully. I don’t care where a player has played before, but until you put them in a position you don’t know [if they’ll work there].
“We’ve got players that can play in a number of roles, a lot of them. We wanted development, progression and goal threat from players, and we already have that, but we know they’ll get better with time.”
Kompany on utilising the seven-day break:
“There are players here who are ready to deliver now and players who will be ready to deliver soon. We wanted a mix on that which we have now, so we’re happy.
“The work now has to be done on the pitch, and we look forward to the games as they will help us to progress quicker.
“Traditionally, training is a good way to observe but we don’t have a lot of training sessions. Some of the guys we’ve signed, I hadn’t seen them in a full 11v11 heavy training session until this week.
“I knew it would be this way, but this week I’m literally discovering some of my players and that’s only beneficial for me & my staff.”
Kompany on the Championship schedule:
“I’m getting used to the unexpected. My coaching trajectory has been interesting, it’s never had a dull moment and that’s heightened by this being a World Cup season.

“Steve Bruce after the game [at West Brom] mentioned that it’s the toughest schedule he’s had since he’s been a coach, and that made me laugh because it’s just my luck this is when I’ve chosen to come to the Championship.
“It’s a harder schedule than usual in one of the toughest leagues in the world, but I’m flexible and all of my staff are used to it as well. Whenever the games are, we embrace them.”
Kompany on another different challenge against Norwich:
“We’ve faced very different types of opposition. Every time so far, the games have either been good for us or very close [when the result hasn’t gone our way].
“Norwich are a team who build a model around going back up if they can, and if they come down, they try not to be exposed to having too many players leaving. They’re a team with good cohesion, and are as good a challenge as it gets, they’ll definitely be up there come the end of the season.
“I think they’re incredibly well equipped for this league, and they’ve got momentum now [having won five in a row]. We’re in a phase, especially at home, where we don’t want to concede anything to anyone.

“We’ll go and try to win this game. There’s a degree of tactics for us watching what they do, but also a degree of self-confidence I want us to show on the day.”
Kompany on the Turf Moor atmosphere:
“[Against Millwall], the players gave it to them [the fans] as well. When it works best is when both players and fans are having a go.
“We can set the tone on the pitch with the tempo to our game. Whether we have the ball or not, it has to be aggressive and on the front foot.
“The fans can give us a lot in those moments and Turf Moor becomes even harder to come to. We want to keep building on that.”
