Manager Vincent Kompany is looking forward to taking charge of the side in front of a packed-out Turf Moor for the first time when Luton Town visit on Saturday.
The Burnley boss held his pre-match press conference on Wednesday. He discussed wanting more of the same from the opening day win over Huddersfield Town, the threat Luton pose and his excitement for a Turf Moor welcome.
Kompany on the week since Huddersfield:
“It’s been excellent. You get to come away with a win from the first game and it feels like an extended pre-season because you get a full week to tweak and fine tune for the next game.
“The next best thing is playing games, and the only thing with games is that you always learn from them. When you’re not 100% fine-tuned, it’s about trying to get the result while you’re learning.
“We did that last Friday, and now the same mission is to do that this Saturday.”
Kompany on re-focusing each game:
“As a coach, you don’t get a lot of satisfaction because a victory lasts about 12 hours until you wake up the next morning, and then you just move on.
“At the start of the week, you’re thinking about the threats of the next opposition, and then you finish the week thinking about the opportunities you can create in the next game through how you approach it.
“I’m not someone who judges based on one performance. Let’s have a block of games and look at what the team has done. Our goal is that at some point this season our performances become a consistent reflection of who we are.”
Kompany on Luton:
“I’ve spent a lot of time watching them and they won’t change the way they play because they’re coming to Turf Moor, but as the season progresses, you have to earn the right for teams to come and sit deep. We’re not there yet.
“Luton are a team with a lot of athleticism who manage to play to their strengths really well. There’s clarity in what they do, and they’re really good at what they do. That’s the threat.
“Like in every game, we’ve had a look at what opportunities there are for us against them.”
Kompany on the addition of Manuel Benson:
“1v1, he’s a threat. We talk about low blocks and it’s harder for teams to make a low block against you when you have someone like him who can beat a man.
“In the final third, he’s a goal threat, and he’ll add the pace that we need to the team. At the business end of the pitch, these types of things are harder to coach.
“Someone like Benson I believe still has a lot of progression in him. He’s going to give us an instinctive performance in the final third, and we need that.”
Kompany on heading up the team at Turf Moor for the first time:
“It’s a home game and we’re expecting it to be a full house. I can talk as much as I want about the game plan, but really the players have got to feel it.
“It doesn’t need to be perfect, but it needs to be a reflection of who we are. We need to make sure there’s plenty of energy, and go for it.
“My experience in English football is that it’s always neutral. If players are going hard, you’ll see some of the best atmospheres and that’s what I expect from Turf Moor. It will happen, and we’ll do it together.
“I walked through the Club Shop yesterday and heard that they’d tripled sales on shirts. All these little bits are just more energy for us.
“I use the words’ jet fuel’, we want to hold onto that. I want to see a team that’s there for the fans, then we can talk about results after the game. The fans, children and families can go home and say they’ve had a good Saturday. That’s where it starts for me.”
