Mike Jackson discusses Thursday night’s game against Southampton at Turf Moor, the impact of the Clarets fans and provides an update on Ashley Westwood.
Jackson on the squad:
“I don’t think I gave them the credit that they deserved the other day [against West Ham United].
“When you watch the game back and take the emotions out of it, you see what’s happened in the game itself and I thought they showed some real good qualities.
“The character you’re after, the work rate, the togetherness, and the ability to dig in when you have to, I thought that we showed all of that in spades. That’s the identity of this group, and they showed that they’re willing to fight.”
Jackson on how important the Clarets fans are:
“I played here [Turf Moor] against Burnley under the lights in big games when I was at Preston [North End], so I know what’s it’s like and I know the impact that this group of fans can have.
“They know their football, and I’m sure that they’re with the group. You saw with the Everton game earlier this month, their backing and the atmosphere can be really powerful for the lads.
“We want Turf Moor to be somewhere that’s not nice to come to [for opponents], and that’s what we need to make it.”
Jackson on the remaining seven games:
“You’ve got to see them as opportunities and approach them as challenges, because that’s what they are.
“This group has proven in the past that they’re willing to take stuff on, and that’s the game you play, that’s the world that we live in as footballers.”
Jackson on Ashley Westwood:
“He’s going to see a surgeon, the doctor has gone with him, and we will know a bit more after that. We’re seeing if he needs anything further in terms of an operation.
“He’s such a popular member of the group, it’s something we can tap into to try and put a smile on his face when he switches the TV on tomorrow night, we’re doing it for him as well as us.
“I use him as an example when I’m with the U23s because he’s such a good role model when he’s around the place. We just hope he gets better soon.”
