Johann Berg Gudmundsson was on target on Monday night firing the Clarets to victory against Sheffield United.
Having not scored on home turf since February 2021, the substitute secured a brace, and the three points in style.
“I’m feeling really good, just helping the team. I was disappointed to be on the bench but that’s how it is, we played two days ago, for an old body like mine sometimes you need a rest. Just to come on at half-time and help the team is obviously brilliant.”
When asked what his instructions were when coming on he added: “Just to play my game in the position I came in, in the midfield, try to make runs in behind and try to be in the box. Luckily the ball dropped for me twice there and two nice finishes.”
Netting his first goals at home since February 2021, he was happy to contribute to the team's success against the Blades, who ran out winners in the reverse fixture last November.
“It’s been way too long and as I said I’ve been trying to contribute with assists and goals, and I’ve been a bit more assists than goals this season. Hopefully I can add a few more goals this season but yes, it’s nice to help the team, especially against Sheffield United. They obviously beat us in the first game, and we wanted to get our revenge and we got that.
“It was [in the back of my mind]. When you lose to a team, especially a team that’s close to you, you want to get one back definitely and that was in the back of our minds and we did so, so a good job for everybody.”
The Clarets returned to Turf Moor following ecstatic scenes against Middlesbrough on Friday evening, as the Lancashire side celebrated promotion to the top tier.
“Yeah possibly [Friday's emotions had an impact on tonight's game]. I mean Friday is not long ago. The emotion of the game, getting promoted to the Premier League, all the emotions. It’s a short turn around as well to a game on a Monday so of course it can have an affect but again we’ve shown that we can win in different ways.
An in-depth look back at a previous encounter between the Clarets & the Blades
“We weren’t great first half, we were a bit better second half and they were down to 10 men, it’s always difficult to break down when they have a low block so yeah, we always find our way and we did that today.”
The win at the Riverside Stadium saw Gudmundsson lead the Clarets contingent with an Icelandic clap celebration, which the Turf Moor crowd replicated tonight in his honour.
“It was quite nice to see. Obviously, we did it Friday against Middlesbrough and you never know it might come out at the last game of the season, you never know.”
Finally, the drive and determination within the squad continues with six games left of the Championship campaign. When asked if beating the records point tally was on his mind, Gudmundsson finished: “We want to go for everything, we want to have silverware in our hands. We want to go for the record points as well, we know we can get that. We are a team, we are relentless, the manager is relentless, he’s on us every single day, every single moment. We want to go for everything and that’s lifting the trophy and hopefully we can also break the record.”
