Match-winner Chris Wood knew he needed to step up before heading the winner which sealed the Clarets’ dramatic comeback win over Aston Villa.
Wood’s fourth goal of the season was only his second since November as the Clarets twice came from behind in the second half to seal a thrilling 3-2 victory.
And after seeing his striking colleagues end their recent barren runs, Wood admitted it was his turn to deliver the goods as Sean Dyche’s men scored three times for the second time in four days following their FA Cup success at Fulham last weekend.
“There’s no getting away from it. It’s been a hard season for us boys,” said Wood, who is still the Clarets’ leading scorer after a brilliant headed goal secured back-to-back Premier League wins for the first time since June.
“Barnesy got off a little run last week, Jay fired on Sunday and Vyds before that in the Cup, so it was on me to start firing.
“Every week I try my best to score. Sometimes it doesn’t happen but thankfully it did happen today and now it’s about me building on this and going again.
“It was a nice finish, if I say so, but it took an age to go in.
“It went very slowly and the boys on the side said it took an age to walk itself into the back of the net, but I was just thankful it went in and it’s another three points, which was the best thing for us.
“It was nice that I could contribute, not just trying to work hard and fight and hold the ball up but actually get on the scoresheet.”
Wood’s fourth goal in five starts against Villa came three minutes after Dwight McNeil had made it 2-2 with his first goal of the season.
Before that, Ben Mee had headed home Burnley’s first equaliser at the start of a pulsating second half.
And Wood paid tribute to the Clarets’ resilience as they hit back to stun Villa and reach the half-way point of the season on 22 points – seven points behind a top-10 spot and nine points clear of the relegation places.
“We knew we were a little bit off it in the first half but we came out the blocks firing in the second half and showed what we’re really about,” added the striker.
“It showed the fight we have. We talk about it every single year, the character we have in the dressing room, and we have it in abundance.
“It (the table) looks a lot healthier than it did at the start of the season. There’s still a long way to go.
“We need to get those 18 more points on the board and then take a breath and go again.
