One of English football’s elder statesmen, Sheffield Wednesday was formed as an offshoot of the Wednesday Cricket Club in September 1867.
After turning professional in 1887 and joining the football league five years later, the Owls would go on to compete in the top two divisions of English football until relegation in 1975. During that time they won four Division One titles, an FA Cup and a Charity Shield.
The South Yorkshire side fought back though and were founding members of the Premier League in 1992 right the way through until relegation to the second tier in 2000.
After three seasons, the Owls then suffered another relegation to League One, but it only took the Yorkshire side two seasons to bounce back and the Blue side of Sheffield were back in the Championship in 2005 after a play-off final win over Hartlepool United.
Following five years back in the second tier, Wednesday were relegated in 2010 to League One but in the same fashion, the Owls were promoted back to the Championship within just two seasons in 2012.
10 established years in the Championship came to an end in 2021 when they dropped once more to League One, but were once again back up in 2023 as Darren Moore guided Wednesday to the play-off final and sealed promotion with a victory over Barnsley at Wembley.
Moore departed in the summer ahead of the Owls' 2023/24 campaign, with Xisco Munoz taking charge but the Spaniard was dismissed in October and Danny Rohl stepped in as boss in October 2023 and doing so became the youngster manager in the EFL.
The German was appointed with the aim of keeping them in the division after a start of three points from 11 matches and he achieved that on the final day of the season, courtesy of a 2-0 victory at Sunderland with goals from Liam Palmer and Josh Windass.

Played for both:
Ross Wallace – Born in Dundee, the Scotsman first moved to England in 2006 and joined Burnley four years later. The winger was a consistent performer across his five-year spell, totalling 165 appearances in all competitions. In 2015, he moved from Turf Moor to Wednesday, where he would spend three years and rack up more than 100 appearances. The Owls reached the Championship play-offs in two of the three seasons he was at the club, with Wallace playing a vital role in both. He would later return to the Clarets in an Academy coaching capacity in 2021, departing to take up a first-team role with Fleetwood Town in December 2023.
George Boyd – Boyd’s three years in Claret between 2014 and 2017 saw him feature more than 100 times, playing in the Premier League and Championship. The winger was voted Player of the Year in his first season with the club and covered more distance per game than any other Premier League player that year. His endeavour soon made him a fan-favourite at the club, and a famous winning goal in a 1-0 home win against then-champions Manchester City further cemented that reputation. Like Wallace, he swapped Lancashire for Yorkshire, spending two years at Wednesday before continuing his career elsewhere.
Bailey Peacock-Farrell – Having started his senior career with Leeds United, Peacock-Farrell joined Burnley ahead of the 2019/20 Premier League season as competition for Joe Hart and Nick Pope. His league debut came in November 2020, away at Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, before the goalkeeper spent 2021/22 on loan at Sheffield Wednesday. At the beginning of that season, he set a club-record as the first Owls goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet in each of the Club’s first five league games. The Northern Ireland international spent 2023/24 on-loan again at Danish side AGF Aarhus, before joining Birmingham City permanently this summer.
