One of the Clubs whom Burnley have faced off against the most throughout history, Sheffield United were established in 1889, an offshoot of the ‘Sheffield United Cricket Club’.
The Club enjoyed a golden period from 1895 to 1925, champions of England in 1898 and runners-up twice more, also winning the FA Cup four times.
Contrastingly though, the Blades fell into the Third Division in the mid 1970s before successive promotions under Dave Bassett saw them get back into the top flight in 1990 to end a 14-year exile.
Founding members of the Premier League, United also scored the first-ever goal in the newly-formed division via former striker Brian Deane. They were relegated two years later however and suffered the same fate having eventually reached the summit again five years later.
Slipping into League One for four seasons, it then took just two back in the Championship to reach the Premier League once more. Under Chris Wilder, a successful first season playing top-flight football wasn’t mirrored the following campaign, relegated with just 23 points.
And last term, after a sluggish start, the side reached the play-offs but got knocked out in the semi-final by eventual winners Nottingham Forest. Subsequently, the 2022/23 campaign will be a second back in the Championship for the Blades.

Notable Connections: Matt Lowton came through the ranks with Sheffield United having joined the club as a 15-year-old.
After loans with local non-league side Sheffield FC and Hungarian side Ferencvaros, the full back made 89 first team appearances for the Blades before moving to Aston Villa.
He joined Burnley in the summer of 2015, and helped the Clarets to promotion from the Championship in his first season at Turf Moor. Lowton surpassed 200 appearances as a Burnley player at the back end of last season.
Former striker John Francis also played for the pair, racking up over 100 games for Burnley after 42 in a United shirt. He now works in the Clarets’ academy.
Elsewhere, defender Gary Cahill had loans with both during the mid 2000s from parent club Aston Villa.
Last Time We Met: On the final day of the 2020/21 Premier League season, hosts United ran out 1-0 winners at Bramall Lane.
With their relegation already confirmed, the Blades – managed by then caretaker and now permanent boss Paul Heckingbottom – scored the only goal of the game midway through the first half via David McGoldrick.
Earlier in the season, the Clarets had won by the same scoreline when the pair met at Turf Moor.
