Originating from a merger between ‘Rotherham County’ and ‘Rotherham Town’, Rotherham United were founded in 1925 so are one of the younger clubs in the Football League.
Winning Division Three North in 1951, the Millers went on to achieve their highest ever league position of third in the Second Division in 1955. Only ‘goal average’ denied them a place in the top flight. Rotherham were also involved in the first League Cup final in 1961, but lost over two legs to Aston Villa.
They then plummeted down to Division Four by 1973, taking eight years to reach the second tier oncemore. The 1990s however again saw them yo-yo between the third and fourth tiers.
Back-to-back promotions saw them into the Championship after the turn of the century, and it has been a pattern of promotions and relegations between that and League One since.
Last season again saw the Millers promoted from the third tier. Additionally, they won the Papa John’s Trophy last term for the second time in their history.

In his playing career, Casper made the move to Burnley from Rotherham – where he made 102 appearances. He would rack up more than double that for the Clarets, scoring 74 times.
And more recently, left back Danny Lafferty went on loan to the New York Stadium from Burnley in 2015. The Northern Ireland international played over 40 times during his time at Turf Moor, moving to Sheffield United in January 2017.
