With the new Sky Bet Championship season now approaching, we bring you the lowdown on all 23 of our league opponents

Fellow Lancastrians Preston were formed in 1880, proceeding the cricket club known by the same name for the five years prior. North End’s home venue of Deepdale is football’s oldest ground to have been used continuously by a league club.

Alongside the Clarets, Preston were founding members of the Football League in 1888, winning the league in its inaugural season along with the FA Cup. They did so unbeaten in all matches, becoming the first ‘Invincibles’.

They then won the league again the following season, but have since won just one FA Cup in terms of major honours.

Since 1970, the club have spent the majority of time in either League One or League Two, missing out on promotion to the Premier League with defeat in the Championship Play-Off final to Bolton Wanderers in 2001.

This campaign will be their seventh consecutive one in the second tier, having won promotion from League One in 2015.

Notable Connections: Having spent his early days at Manchester United, Clarets midfielder Josh Brownhill made the move to Preston in 2012 and made his first team debut the following year.

Brownhill made 58 appearances between 2013/14 and 2014/15, but went onto seal a permanent move to Bristol City in 2016 after a loan spell with Barnsley.

It was from the Robins where Brownhill made the switch to Turf Moor in January 2020, making over 80 appearances as a Claret already.

Amongst the many to have played for both Burnley and North End, current youth team boss Tony Philliskirk is one of the stand outs. Netting six goals for the Lilywhites in 1989, he would move onto Bolton Wanderers & Peterborough United before moving back to Lancashire with the Clarets.

Last Time We Met: Burnley’s last meeting with the Lilywhites was a memorable one in our run to the 2015/16 Championship title.

6000 Clarets fans packed out Deepdale on a Friday night in April, seeing Joey Barton’s free-kick in the 6th minute deflect past Chris Kirkland. That proved the only goal of the game and put Burnley to within two wins of promotion.
