With the new Sky Bet Championship season now approaching, we bring you the lowdown on all 23 of our league opponents

In this article, the club in focus is Coventry City...

Originally recognised as ‘Singers F.C.’ when they were formed in 1883, Coventry adopted their current name in 1898. From there, it took 20 years to join the Southern League - now a part of English football’s non-league system - before eventually being elected into the Football League in 1919.

After jumping between tiers in the pyramid for a period of time, the Sky Blues eventually reached the top flight and spent 34 years there. They played in the first ever Premier League season, and were in the PL until 2001.

Ex-Manchester United player Mark Robins has guided them back to some form of glory though, promoted from both League Two and League One as well as picking up the Football League Trophy in 2017.

This campaign will be their third back in the second tier and their second back playing in Coventry.

Notable Connections: During his time at Chelsea, Clarets midfielder Jack Cork spent half a season on loan with Coventry, making 21 appearances for the Sky Blues. In the second half of that 2009/10 season, he would then link up as a loanee with Burnley too.

Elsewhere, former captain Chris McCann - who came through the ranks to be a long-time servant at Turf Moor - joined City on loan from American side Atalanta United in 2016, three years after departing Burnley.

Others to have played for both clubs also involve now Chesterfield manager Paul Cook and the late Ray Pointer, scorer of 118 goals during a successful spell with the Clarets which also saw him play for England.

Last Time We Met: It’s already been over a decade since the two clubs last met, that coming in April 2012 with Coventry relegated that season to League One.

Burnley finished 13th that season, with the pair drawing 1-1 at Turf Moor a few weeks before the season drew to a close. Charlie Austin had fired the Clarets ahead 20 minutes in, but Clive Platt grabbed an equaliser for the visitors in the second half.
