With the new Sky Bet Championship season now approaching, we bring you the lowdown on all 23 of our league opponents

In this article, the club in focus is Bristol City...

Founded in 1894, Bristol City have spent all bar 11 years of their existence playing in either the second or third tier of the English Football pyramid. Nine of those 11 were spent in the top division, where they recorded a record high finish of second in 1906-07. The Robins have not reached the top flight since 1980 though.

Their close geographical placement to the Welsh border also allowed them entry into the Welsh Cup in the mid 1900s, winning the competition once – in 1934.

City also hold the record for the most amount of Football League Trophies won with three. They were last promoted back in the 2014-15 season, winning League One, and have remained a Championship club since.

Notable Connections: City striker Nahki Wells spent two and a half years with the Clarets, before making the move to Ashton Gate in January 2020.

Signing at Turf Moor from Huddersfield Town in August 2017, Wells made nine Premier League appearances during his first season with the club as well as one in the FA Cup away at Manchester City.

Two season long loans to Championship club Queen’s Park Rangers followed, after which he made the move to Bristol City.

Last Time We Met: Burnley have enjoyed a run of five consecutive wins against City, four of those coming in the second division. Most recently though, the two clubs met in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

On a wet day at Turf Moor in late January 2017, Belgian Steven Defour put the ball through a defender’s legs to set up Sam Vokes for the opener just before the break.

The midfielder then doubled the Clarets’ lead midway through the second half with a fine goal of his own, finishing off a swift counter-attacking move with a deft chip over Robins’ goalkeeper Fabian Giefer.

Former Robin Josh Brownhill played the full 90 minutes for the visitors, signing at Turf Moor three years later.
