Manager Bee hopes to gain momentum from win
Burnley FC Women put on a professional performance at Lancashire FA's County Ground this afternoon securing a 4-0 win over table toppers Huddersfield Town Women.
The win was key for the clarets, who entered the game on the back of three defeats. Huddersfield meanwhile had been riding high having not lost a game in their opening four league fixtures.
In the September heat the clarets came out firing and went ahead two minutes in when forward Courtney Willis slotted past keeper Bethan Davies. 1-0.
Buoyed by this, the clarets enjoyed lots of possession following the goal, however the visitors looked dangerous on the counter.
In the 22nd minute clarets keeper Lauren Bracewell, who made a welcome return to the side following an injury that kept her out for the previous two fixtures, made an excellent save when a threatening Huddersfield ball travelled across the face of goal.
Burnley maintained pressure on the away side with the midfield working tirelessly to feed balls through to forwards Courtney Willis and Evie Priestley. They also enjoyed great success on the wing, with Dom Cooper looking dangerous and sending many a good ball into the box.
A foul against Willis saw a penalty awarded in the 40th minute, with Nic Worthington calmly slotting home from the spot. 2-0.
Huddersfield made a change at half-time, with Autumn Housley making way for Vicky Abbott.
While the clarets came out as brightly as the first half and 10 minutes in, Nic Worthington laid the ball off for midfielder Millie Ravening whose shot hit the post and bounced in, 3-0.
In the first change for the home side, Dani Cooper made way for Kerry Hope and three minutes later Burnley nearly add a fourth when a scramble in the box was cleared by Davies.
In a clever move, Burnley's Lizzy Hamer found herself through on goal and while her first effort was saved, the midfielder was quick to react to the follow up to make it 4-0.
Minutes later the ball was in the back of the net again but was flagged offside.
Keeper Lauren Bracewell and backline of Sammy Fleck, Cara Bickett and Olivia Wilson worked hard as Huddersfield enjoyed a flurry of possession, forcing Bracewell to make two saves.
An injury to Kerry Hope saw Katie Thomas come on to add more attacking prowess.
Burnley managed to clear any late Huddersfield attacks running out 4-0 winners when the whistle was blown.
Manager Matt Bee said: "That's a big win, it's been coming over the last few weeks. There haven't been many things wrong with the recent performances and we knew that if we found the edge in the big moments we would cause them problems.
"We did that well today and we found a good balance between our disciplined structure but also the freedom in possession to play. At times, the way we moved the ball and progressed play was fantastic.
"We spoke a lot around mentality this week, the group have shown character and that is now the springboard to push on over the coming weeks.
"I'm proud of every single player in the squad for the resilience and character we showed today."
