Clarets number 7 on using Carabao Cup victory to build momentum

Jóhann Berg Gudmundsson praised his teammates on Wednesday evening, following the Clarets Carabao Cup win.

Following two league defeats, he spoke of the importance to taking this win into the weekend's fixture.

“It felt really good, to get the first win of the season is massively important. I thought we played really well as well. We had a good few chances, I don’t think they had any chances to be fair, so really good day and hopefully we can just take it into the next game.

“We want to go into every game and win it, the first two games have been difficult but against great teams as well. Today was another opportunity for us, a few changes as well, different players showing their skills and I think that we played really well, into the next round. We want to go as far as possible in every cup competition and taking it into the weekend is the most important as well.”

The Clarets didn't have it easy, with Vitinho, Aaron Ramsey and Hjalmar Ekdal all forced off due to injuries, meaning a change in personnel over the course of the 90 minutes, however Gudmundsson credits the team for adapting so well.

“I think that’s credit to the group, we had I think three injuries and we dealt with it really well. Different players came in, did a fantastic job so, as I said just a great day today and a win is massively important and into the next round.”

Zeki Amdouni grabbed the goal on the night and as a senior pro, the 32-year-old was pleased to see the newcomer hit the back of the net and to play his part in helping the youngsters like Amdouni develop.

“Yeah, his first goal for the Club, it’s good for him as well to get off the mark, like Lyle last weekend. So, yes as many goal scorers as we can possibly have this season is going to help us and Zeki is a fantastic player and he’s going to be a difficult guy to deal with this season.

“We try to help them every day, every game but again I want to be on the pitch as well so that’s the most important thing, I try to be on the pitch as long as possible. 90 minutes today is a good thing for me but yes, we senior pro’s we try to help the young guys, there’s a lot of new players as well. New system that their learning, we play in all kinds of different systems that you need to learn, and it takes time - but today I think it was a massive improvement from us.”

With the win giving the team something to build on, next up is Spurs at home on Saturday afternoon and Gudmundsson is ready for the encounter.

“I feel good, we played really well here, we need to take that into next weekend. We know Spurs are a fantastic side, but we go into that game and just play our game, that’s the most important thing. We play our game, don’t worry about the players we’re playing against, and just go out there. Turf Moor as well, hopefully the crowd will be up for a big game and help us through to get the first three points in the league.”

Finally, the Icelandic finished with a thank you to the travelling fans who made the visit to the City Ground.

“Fantastic support, we showed that in the end, we went over to clap them, they were still there and luckily, we got a goal for them to go into the next round - so we gave something back. They’ve been fantastic last season and this season as well and I’ve always said we’ll need them in home games and away games, and they always show up.”
