Burnley Football club are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of former Burnley player Gary Rowell after a lengthy battle with leukaemia.
The Seaham-born striker joined Sunderland in the early 1970s and made his debut for the club he had supported in December 1975. He became a prolific goalscorer whilst at Roker Park, netting a total of 103 goals. After making just short of 300 appearances for the Black Cats he signed for Norwich City in the summer of 1984.
12 months later he moved back to the North East, this time joining Middlesbrough for the duration of the 1985/86 season. After spells with Brighton and Carlisle United he joined Burnley on a free transfer in August 1988.
Rowell spent two seasons with the Clarets; however, he struggled to maintain a regular first team place through injuries. His one and only goal for the club was in a game against Colchester United in September 1988, this was his 100th league goal of his career. In May 1990 he was released by the club and continued to live in the area for a while.
