Matej Vydra and Bailey Peacock-Farrell both left Turf Moor disappointed after their personal landmarks weren’t enough to earn the Clarets any reward.
Vydra scored his third goal in five Premier League games as he netted in back-to-back top-flight fixtures for the first time since February 2020 to put fast-starting Burnley ahead against Newcastle United.
But a quick-fire double – inspired by substitute Allan Saint-Maximin – turned the tide the Tynesiders away to make it a losing home Premier League debut for Peacock-Farrell.
The Northern Ireland international learned on Saturday that he would be stepping in for the injured Nick Pope to make just his second league appearance for the Clarets.

He made one outstanding first-half save from Dwight Gayle and looked composed throughout.
But the 24-year-old was powerless to stop Saint-Maximin teeing up Jacob Murphy for Newcastle’s equaliser before the Frenchman netted a superb solo effort to give the visitors a 2-1 win and a first victory in eight games to lift them to within a point of Burnley in the table.
“It was a proud moment for me to make my home debut but in the end the result didn’t go our way, so it’s disappointing,” said Peacock-Farrell.
“To be in the positions we were in both games – scoring and leading – to come away with nothing is disappointing.
“In the dressing room the lads know that, and we’ve got to go again next week.”
The Clarets go to Manchester United next Sunday looking to bounce back from successive defeats since the international break.

Sean Dyche’s men led in both games against Southampton and then Newcastle without being able to see the job through and remain seven points clear of the relegation places in 15th in the table with seven games to go.
“It is positive for myself because I scored, but if I could I would swap the goal for three points because that is more important right now than my statistics,” said Vydra whose sixth goal of the season gave the Clarets an early grip from an impressive start.
“We were unlucky we didn’t score a second goal because we had quite a lot of chances at the beginning of the second half.
“When they scored for 2-1 it was difficult because the whole team was dropped on the box and we didn’t create that many more chances to draw.

“If we had scored for 2-0 it would have been over, but we have to be focused for 95-plus minutes.
“In the last two weeks we have been winning and not taken any points.
“With six weeks to go we have to be focused every single game and to start to take some points because in my opinion we lost six points from our last two games.”
Vydra and Wood continued their prolific pairing by combining for the opening goal 18 minutes in.
But the duo were the only senior strikers available to Dyche - who threw on Joel Mumbongo for the last few minutes - with Ashley Barnes still working his way back towards full fitness following a thigh injury.
And Jay Rodriguez was also absent after his wife went into labour overnight.
“That's important and we hope that’s gone well for them. We should have him back next week," added the Burnley boss, who also expects goalkeeper Nick Pope to be a short-term absentee with a shoulder injury.
