Burnley U18s’ 2023/24 FA Youth Cup journey came to an end courtesy of a 3-0 defeat to Bristol City on Wednesday evening.
The Clarets, who had beaten Birmingham City and Queens Park Rangers to reach the last 16 of the competition, battled well but two moments of real quality proved to be the difference.
Bristol City started the game on the front foot in front of a healthy home crowd, with Archie Taylor forcing Burnley’s Lewis Forshaw into a smart stop from a header.
In a physical game, Clarets wingers Vernon Masara and Zach Johnson were both getting some joy down the left and right respectively.
Burnley’s best chance of the half came just before the half hour but, unfortunately, Rohan Vaughan fell at the crucial moment after being threaded through.
The hosts then broke the deadlock on 32 minutes. Left-back Joe Ashton tripped Raekwan Nelson in the area and Robins captain Calum Hewlett converted from the penalty spot.
Elijah Morrison’s curled effort doubled Bristol City’s lead three minutes into the second half but it didn’t deter the Clarets, who had two chances in quick succession soon after.
Firstly, Zach Johnson looped a header onto the crossbar and away before Rohan Vaughan worked the space for a shot, which was parried behind by Joseph Duncan.
Tony Philliskirk introduced Marley Leuluai and Oli Pimlott as the Clarets searched for a way back into the game, but the Robins sealed the tie with just under 20 minutes to play.
Morrison picked up the ball on the edge of the area and beat Forshaw to find the bottom corner for his second goal of the night.
Burnley were awarded a penalty in the sixth minute of second-half stoppage time for a trip on Oli Pimlott, but Benji Wetshi’s spot-kick was saved by the goalkeeper.
