It took a late moment of magic from Spurs to book a place in the fourth round of the Emirates FA Cup as a second-half Pedro Porro strike proved to be the winner in a tight contest in North London.
Burnley pushed Ange Postecoglu’s side until the 79th minute when the deadlock was finally broken as the Clarets put in a battling display against the home side.
Manager Vincent Kompany made five changes from the trip to Villa Park last weekend as Arijanet Muric, Hannes Delcroix, Anass Zaroury, Josh Cullen and Aaron Ramsey all came into the XI for James Trafford, Jordan Beyer, Johann Berg Gudmundsson, Sander Berge and Josh Brownhill.
First Half
Following a lively start in London, Burnley’s first real effort on target came with six minutes played when Odobert cut inside on his right foot and curled the ball aiming towards the far corner but Vicario had it covered.
The hosts had an opportunity themselves shortly after when Skipp played a through ball in for Richarlison but the Brazilian’s effort skimmed wide of the target.
Johnson then tested the hands of Muric as the former Forest winger worked his way inside from the right and unleashed a shot towards the far post but the Kosovan shot-stopper pushed it away for a corner.
Burnley carved open another decent chance just before the half-hour mark when Zaroury dinked a lovely ball into the path of Amdouni inside the area, but the Swiss forward couldn’t just quite find his feet before firing over the crossbar.
With nothing to separate the two sides heading into the break and no real clear-cut chances in the cup tie, the game remained goalless at half-time.
Second Half
Kompany introduced Bruun Larsen at the break for Foster as the Clarets looked to break the deadlock although the first opportunity of the half fell to Lo Celso, whose fierce strike was palmed away by Muric.
Kulusevski then tried his luck after cutting in from the left but the Swede’s well-hit curling effort sailed just wide of the target.
With an hour played in North London and both sides still aiming for the fourth round, the Clarets made a triple change as Tresor, Redmond and Al-Dakhil replaced Ramsey, Zaroury and Taylor.
As the final 10 minutes approached with both sides still pushing for the opener in a tight contest, Spurs broke the deadlock with a fine strike from Porro in the 79th minute.
The Spanish full-back picked up a loose ball from outside the area before and charged towards goal before rifling the ball into the roof of the net to give the hosts the lead.
There was a late chance for the Clarets to equalise in stoppage time as Muric’s flick on from a corner was met by Amdouni who could only guide the ball over.
