It was an agonising night for two of the Clarets as they both missed out on a place at the finals of Euro 2020.
Johann Berg Gudmundsson had one step in the tournament with Iceland before they were sunk by two late goals in Hungary.
And Bailey Peacock-Farrell’s Northern Ireland also suffered late heartache in Belfast as they were beaten by Slovakia in their play-off final.
Gudmundsson played for 72 minutes of Iceland’s decider with his side winning 1-0 when the Clarets’ winger was replaced.
But Hungary scored in the 88th and 92nd minutes to complete a dramatic comeback and a 2-1 win to book their place in the finals.
Clarets join up with countries to start World Cup bid
Northern Ireland took their tie to extra-time thanks to a late own-goal from Slovakia to make it 1-1 after 90 minutes, former Burnley striker Kyle Lafferty almost claiming a last-gasp winner with an effort which hit the post.
But Clarets’ keeper Peacock-Farrell then conceded again in the second period of extra-time in front of 1,000 fans at Windsor Park as his side was denied a second successive appearance in the finals of the tournament.
Elsewhere, Turf Moor team-mate Nick Pope started in goal for England in their 3-0 friendly win over the Republic of Ireland at Wembley.
Pope played the first half and maintained his record of never having conceded a goal for England as he earned his fourth cap.
His planned replacement at the break by Manchester United's Dean Henderson meant no meeting with Burnley team-mates Robbie Brady and Kevin Long, who came off the bench for Ireland for the last half hour.
