The boss believes that keeping things simple and sticking to what Burnley know best holds the key to his players emulating their famous win at ‘superpower’ Chelsea this weekend.
The Clarets grabbed their first victory of the Premier League season against Brentford on Saturday and travel to Stamford Bridge brimming with confidence.
Dyche led his team to a memorable 3-2 triumph against Antonio Conte’s Chelsea – the defending champions – on the opening day of the 2017-18 season and knows exactly what it takes to cause an upset against a top-flight big-hitter.
And asked if sticking to their principles and delivering their usual game plan can fire the Clarets to victory against the table-toppers in the capital, Dyche said: “I think it’s vital against these teams.
“There is a gap between playing like-minded teams like ourselves compared to the superpower teams, especially when they’re going well – which Chelsea are.
“Can it be done? Yes. We’ve experienced that in the past and have delivered performances that can win against these teams.
“It is tough – but our mentality inside gives us a chance. We’re thinking about nothing other than how we can work as a team to get something from the game. Inside the game, we want to go and perform there and win – but it’s not easy against these kind of sides.
“We’ve worked here as a group for a long time – we’ve all become more rounded in the Premier League and what it is. The players are aware of the opposition – we just reinforce some of the simple things and strip it all back, take a generalised view and say: ‘it’s about what we do.’
“There’s always a balance – and it’s about reminding us what we’re doing.”
Dyche’s team have shown considerable signs of promise since the start of the season but have been unable to transform extended periods of dominance in games into goals.
That all changed at a rocking Turf Moor last weekend, however, as goals from Chris Wood, Matt Lowton and red-hot summer signing Maxwel Cornet downed Premier League new boys Brentford 3-1.
Burnley overcame a similarly slow start last season to claim a haul of ten wins and comfortably survive relegation by 11 points.
Dyche knows resilience is key to maintaining top-flight status but admits there’s no better confidence-builder than racking up three points.
The Clarets chief, who travels to west London with a near fully-fit squad at his disposal
this weekend, added: “You have to live in reality in the Premier League – it’s not easy winning games and not something that happens all the time.
“There are challenges in the Premier League and you do lose some games – and that’s hard to take. But there has to be a consistency in how you are and what you do, and there’s a nice balance to that.
“We try and keep positive here in the way we operate – and you get a win and it adds to that. We’re a positive unit regardless of what the challenges are, but [a win] does add to it.
“The marker we look to give to any game is our performance – we start with that and then we’ll see what else comes our way.”
