Sean Dyche felt his side handed the initiative to Southampton after the Clarets surrendered a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 at St Mary's.
Burnley were in cruise control after half an hour as an early Chris Wood penalty and a stunning second from strike partner Matej Vydra rewarded the visitors’ dominance.

Stuart Armstrong then halved the deficit before ex-Claret Danny Ings levelled matters on the stroke of half time, capitalising on a defensive mistake.
And Nathan Redmond completed the fightback midway through the second half with what proved to be the winner, despite a glorious late chance falling to Chris Wood, who was brilliantly denied by Fraser Forster in the Saints’ goal.
“We had a lot of control of the first half hour of the game and played very well.
"We made simple decisions and did the basics well, but then we just flatlined for 15 minutes and you can’t afford to do that in the Premier League,” mused Dyche.

“Without being disrespectful to Southampton we gave them a chance to come and win a game and we shouldn’t have done that.
“We often lock games down, but we were a little bit naïve by our standards in that last 15 minutes of the first half and made some poor decisions at key moments, and suddenly, from nowhere, they had a feel for the game.”
Dyche added: “In the second half it was a bit of a ding-dong, to be fair. The third goal is a bit of a disappointment because we had the ball on the edge of their box and gave it away too easily.
“Both keepers made saves and it was end-to-end before Woody has a real chance, right at the end, to make it a 3-3.
“But in the end it wasn’t to be and we do know how to see games out better than that. Today, we just didn’t do it.”

Dyche, who lost Erik Pieters’ to a hamstring injury just after Southampton’s opener, added: “It’s a strange one today because when we pick the bones out of the game, there were a lot of good things about the performance, particularly in the first half hour.
“You can never control a game completely, but we had a lot of control, the two centre forwards scored again and there were so many good things.
“But there was a little bit of naivety crept in, so we’ll be working hard to make sure that doesn’t happen again.”
