Boss Sean Dyche was delighted to see fans back behind his team on the road – and to reward them with a couple of goals.
Clarets’ fans were able to follow their side away from home for the first time since February, 2020.
And they saw Dyche’s men win 2-0 at Oldham Athletic with Jay Rodriguez and teenager Lewis Richardson hitting the target in front of the near 1000 supporters who had made the trip.
“It was terrific. I think we all want that,” said the Dyche.
“To see our own fans away from home in a pre-season game has got to be a good sign. We hope so, anyway, and it was great to see the fans there.
“They had some good chances in the first half and didn’t take them but in the second half we showed enough there – like we should do – and I thought we were really sharp, so I was pleased for that and it was good for the supporters to see a couple of goals.”
The Clarets found it tough to stamp their authority on their first public pre-season work-out before the break as the League Two Latics made the best of the chances.
But the only two efforts on target before half-time came for Burnley through Erik Pieters and Johann Berg Gudmundsson.
And following widespread changes, the visitors then dominated a second 45 minutes capped by goals from Rodriguez and a first at senior level not behind closed doors for 18-year-old front man Richardson.
“The lads have had a heavy week this week which is why we mixed up the teams,” added Dyche, who utilised all his fit and available senior outfield players.
“They had 90 minutes on Tuesday at the training ground and a heavy couple of days, so I thought there might be a little bit of lethargy which I thought in the first half there was - more mentally as well.
“The team that came on second half, there was a lot of sharpness to it and they looked clear-minded and overall it was a good end to a good week.”
Rodriguez has certainly enjoyed a decent few days with three goals in two games, while Richardson made it a memorable afternoon in his fledgling career.
“He’s a young talent, so we’ll how he goes. He’s maturing and getting more used to it,” Dyche told Clarets Plus.
“He had moments last season when he was in amongst us.
“I know we were stretched with injuries but we know he’s in the background, working hard at his game and he’s done well this pre-season, working hard amongst the young players in the main first team group.
“These are good games for the young lads as well, mixing with the first team lads.”
