Burnley FC Women fell to their third league defeat of the season at Derby County after taking the lead in a promising first half performance.
Solid defending had given the Clarets the springboard to break out and catch the home side on the break, but the home team drew level after the referee adjudged a handball and awarded a penalty.
The second half saw the Clarets denied by two great saves before the home team took control of the game by scoring twice to finish with a comfortable 3-1 victory.
The Clarets began Sunday’s challenge in a determined mood when Katie Thomas broke forward to test the home back line.
And following a spell of pressure from the hosts, it was the visitors who took the lead when a corner resulted in a scramble in front of goal that led to Thomas firing home through a crowded box.
Derby responded quickly and Sophie Domingo shot wide from distance as frustration mounted for the home team. Their strong possession was often broken up by the Clarets and Chloe Mapp tried her luck when she saw home keeper Charlotte Clarke off her line but shot too high.
However, just after the half hour mark, a penalty was awarded to Derby after the referee adjudged a handball by Cara Bickett. Callan Barber’s kick deceived Lauren Bracewell and the home side levelled the scores.
Buoyed by that goal, Derby were straight onto the attack in the second half. And County took the lead with a concerted attack as the Clarets defence was preoccupied; substitute Jodie Michalska finding the net via a deflection.
From here on in, the home side maintained a strong advantage, and grabbed a crucial third goal when Domingo sprinted wide of the Clarets defence, rounded Bracewell and slotted into the empty net.
The Clarets are due to play West Bromwich Albion on Sunday 8th November at Padiham FC but are awaiting a directive on the Covid-19 restrictions to see if the game can go ahead.
