Josh Cullen says he can't wait to get back on the pitch against Millwall this Sunday, in what the midfielder is expecting to be a tough game.
Reflecting on a busy week training in preparation, the Republic of Ireland international is happy with how the squad are gelling and believes there's plenty more to come from the side.
“I think it's been a positive start. Obviously coming down from the Premier League, a big turnover in personnel in the playing side and the manager changing as well. Naturally, it takes time for everyone to bed in and get used to it and get used to a new club for the lads that have arrived, and for us to build relationships with new players and new staff. So, yeah, to be where we are at the minute we're in a decent place.
“Not that the league position at the minute means anything because there's a long way to go and a lot of points to play for, but it's been good. We're building in the right direction, getting to know each other more and more every training session, every game. Developing as a team, we’re still in the early stages of developing and there’s plenty more to come from us. Hopefully, we can keep improving and be up there in a similar position at the end of the season.”
The Clarets welcomed Head Coach Scott Parker in the summer and 28-year-old Cullen says he's finding working under the boss brilliant.
“I really enjoy it. First and foremost, he’s a manager that's been successful at this level before. So, just trying to learn from him and I think he plays and wants to play a style of football which everyone enjoys, me included.
“We want to have as much of the ball as possible. It goes without saying, we want to be more of a threat and score more goals, and that's what we're working hard on. But it's been great to work under him so far. Him and his staff and everyone around the club, the new boys that have come in have been brilliant. It's been a great start and hopefully that can continue.”
It's been a Josh heavy midfield at points this season, with Cullen teaming up with Josh Brownhill and Josh Laurent, plus Hannibal in the middle of the pitch. How is he finding playing alongside them?
“It’s brilliant. You have to build relationships. Obviously, me and Browny have played together for a couple of years now, so we sort of know each other's game very well. But with Josh Laurent and Hannibal coming in as new signings, it takes time to understand their strengths, weaknesses, positions they like to pick up, runs they like to make, so it’s a work in progress and I really enjoy playing alongside them.”
Cullen, Brownhill and Laurent poked fun at sharing the same name with a Spider-Man celebration during the Clarets' recent win at Hillsborough and Cullen revealed who's idea that was.
“It was Browny’s (Josh Brownhill) idea. He came up to me, I think when we were out looking at the pitch at Hillsborough just before the game he said if one of us scores today, we would do the Spider-Man celebration.
“It was good and a bit of fun. It was for the second goal to go two nil up, so it was an important stage in the game. It was good to have a bit of fun with the celebration and hopefully we'll be able to pull it out a few more times this season.”
Burnley kick off November with a trip to the capital to face Millwall at the Den and whilst Cullen is expecting a tough game, he's itching to get back on the pitch.
“It’s going to be another tough game, as they all are in the Championship. Another team that will be ready for us and we will be ready for them. We've prepared well this week, and we know it'll be a tough game going down there.
“It’s one that we're looking forward to. When you have a week of training, a free week in that sense, and having more training sessions and not a game, you sort of start itching your feet and you want the games to come around quick. We're looking forward to it, getting down there and hopefully putting on a good performance and then getting a positive result.”
