Jack Cork says he is delighted to be one of the leaders in the team this season, having captained the side in three of the four opening games.
The Clarets midfielder addressed the media to look ahead to Saturday’s game against Blackpool, discussing his role, the Tangerines, and his trust in Vincent Kompany.
Cork on being a leader of the group:
“It’s nice to be in that position, but it’s strange because previously it could’ve been given to anyone. It was that sort of Club where so many leaders stood up, but they’ve moved on now, and there are five or six of us with experience who know the Club really well and know the town.
“It’s up to us to show the younger lads how to be a part of this football Club, how to represent the Club and represent the town.
“I don’t think it’s as set as that [me wearing the armband] though, we’ve got the leadership group and whoever’s on the pitch at the time will wear the armband. The more experience group here are looking after the younger group to make sure that standards are high, and [when I do], it’s a privilege to wear it.
“We’re just trying to make sure the families are all settled, they [the players] are all settled, and they’re as happy as they can be so that they can play the best football possible.
“We’ve got a group for the wives and girlfriends to talk if they need any help, and also a separate group just for the guys.”

Cork on being part of the new era:
“It’s been a complete change with a lot of new faces, new people, and new coaches. So far, I’ve been really impressed with everyone who’s come in and hopefully it’ll be successful.
“Going from one style to another can be hard. It’s not gelled so quickly for other Clubs as it has for us so far. We’re doing lots of meetings and lots of other things to go through it really thoroughly.
“Hopefully we can learn faster than others who’ve been going through the same process, and getting results.”
Cork on his fellow midfielders:
“He [Josh Cullen] is such a good player, he takes the ball on anywhere and he’s brave on it. He moves it well and creates things.
“Browny [Josh Brownhill] has been brilliant and [Samuel] Bastien’s playing a bit wider than he has maybe been used to before. Adam Phillips is also in there and he’s been brilliant in training.
“We’ve got a good mix in there and we’re going to need that this season with how many games there are.”
Cork on Vincent Kompany:
“Whatever he wants to do, I’m fully on board with. I said it to him when I signed, I’m 33 years old, and he has to pick the team he thinks will win games.
“A lot of players accept that we’re going to be in and out of the team throughout the season, especially now we’re in a busy period where there’s two games a week for the next few weeks.

“You know you’ll be in that team at some point, so you’ve got to trust someone who’s been there and done that in Vinny.”
Cork on Blackpool:
“They’ve got some good players and we know it’s going to be a tough game, every game of the season will be. We’ve seen that from the first four.
“We need to try and start better to go and get that first home win. I think it’ll change the whole game if we can score first.
“In the last few games, other teams have scored and sat deep so we’ve had to try to probe then. The atmosphere will be good, and if we can score first, they’ll have to come out then it should be an open match.”
