Nujum Sports and Kick It Out deliver Academy workshops & donate Ramadan gift boxes

Burnley FC's Academy were delighted to welcome Nujum Sports and Kick It Out to the Clarets' training ground recently, to deliver education workshops to academy groups.

Staff and players from the Academy U21s, U18s, U15s, U14s and U13s attended the workshops aimed at educating players on topics including Ramadan, discrimination and promoting inclusivity in sport.

In addition to player sessions, the two organisations also delivered one to one sessions and a parent workshop for parents of the U9-U16 Academy age groups, ensuring a wide representation of those connected to the academy could benefit from the workshops.

Sports agency Nujum Sports supports Muslim athletes with physical, spiritual and mental health support, while leading anti-discrimination organisation Kick It Out, work throughout football, education and community sectors to challenge discrimination, encourage inclusive practices and work for positive change.

The workshops were the first time that Nujum Sports and Kick It Out had delivered joint sessions together, to such a large number of groups within a club across a two-day period.

Speaking after the event, Founder and CEO of Nujum Sports Ebadur Rahman said: “Over the last year, Nujum has been working tirelessly with governing bodies, professional clubs, and our ambassadors with a primary mission of ‘Enabling Muslim Athletes to flourish and fulfil their potential’.

“Nujum has always been inspired and motivated by our principles of equality and humanity which are sourced and channelled from our faith. With that spirit and determination, we spent two days at Burnley FC, learning and sharing our knowledge to help us grow together. We were impressed by the thirst for knowledge throughout the Club. Our work will hopefully continue this season and beyond."

Troy Townsend, Head of Player Engagement at Kick It Out, added: “It was an incredible experience delivering sessions across the Youth and Professional Phase groups at the club.

“The understanding and knowledge from the players and staff on topics such as Racism, homophobia and antisemitism was very powerful. The parent session on the close of the first day, really stood out with their appreciation of their personal practices and behaviours shining through. The Club can be rightly proud of those in their care that have created a warm and welcoming environment.”

Following the workshops, Nujum Sports kindly donated Ramadan gift boxes to players across the Club that are observing Ramadan, including players from the men’s first-team and the Academy.

Burnley FC Academy’s Head of Education and Player Care, Conor Craddock, was pleased with the insights gathered from the workshops and emphasised the importance of educating players to eliminate discrimination from the game.

“We were extremely fortunate to have Ebadur and Troy join us last week, to educate and empower our Academy players, staff and families around the topics of Ramadan, anti-racism and discrimination.

“As an Academy, we are always looking at ways to enrich our offer and this is another fantastic example of the invaluable experiences that we are working to provide.”
