Last month, the Club were proud to donate shirts to ‘The GLOVE Project’ in The Gambia via UNISON’s East Lancashire Health Branch who made the trip to Africa and handed the shirts over to the charity.
‘The GLOVE Project’, registered both here in the UK & The Gambia, work intensively on rehabilitation and reintegration for child amputees, ensuring each child receives a well-fitting prosthetic, a place at school, uniform, food and any necessary equipment to help them in their day-to-day lives.
Bicycles are also purchased by the charity, with the distances children need to travel to get to school in The Gambia frequently being high. Accordingly, without a bicycle, school would likely not be an option for most child amputees in the country.
Fiona Wild, of UNISON’s East Lancashire Health Branch, said: “The kids were overwhelmed with the Burnley shirts which were donated by the Club.
“I cannot thank the Club enough for their generosity towards these children, as most of them have very little to call their own.
“They were beaming with pride, especially when the day after being presented with their shirts, we turned up to meet them all for a treat and they were all lined up in them.
“There were many people coming up to them and saying how smart they looked wearing the shirts. They didn’t stop smiling all day, which was really lovely to see.”
Fiona made the journey to The Gambia alongside colleague Karen Narramore, and Karen’s son Tom.
Making home visits, members from UNISON’s East Lancashire Health Branch encourage acceptance and value by child amputee’s families, promoting love and involvement by the local community.
Using their healthcare knowledge, the UK-based charity also help to monitor the amputees’ growth, with new prosthetic limbs needed every six to nine months dependent on growth rate. UNISON help with the funding for these new prosthetics, and any potential re-amputations.
Fiona added, “We had an amazing but very humbling experience in The Gambia, it’s one which I will never forget.
“All of us at UNISON’s East Lancashire Health Branch will continue to support ‘The GLOVE Project’ and the vital work which they carry out in giving these children hope where before that may not have existed.”
