Following on from our Pledgeball partnership announcement at the start of the season, the Club are delighted to announce our participation in the world’s biggest football campaign to tackle climate change, Green Football Weekend, joining a group of 80 professional UK clubs in the battle to protect our world. This Saturday, as part of the Green Football Weekend campaign the game at Carrow Road will be a ‘greener game’, where it’s not just the players but fan action who will decide the winner. By scoring green goals by taking climate-friendly actions, our legendary fans can help us take home the silverware, tackle climate change, protect nature and save money all at the same time.
Burnley FC are joining 80 of the UK’s top clubs and fans across the country in unleashing the power of football to tackle climate change. It aims to make its weekend fixture as carbon friendly as possible, and the captain’s will be wearing green armbands to show their support for protecting our world.
Over the past two weeks, fans have been scoring green goals in the Green Football Cup, by taking climate-friendly actions, including taking shorter showers, eating more vegetarian meals and telling their clubs what they’d like them to do to go greener. With the tournament closing on Sunday, we are encouraging even more fans to get scoring for a final push. Burnley fans can choose their activities and register their goals at greenfootballweekend.com. By taking part in this campaign and other upcoming Pledgeball fixtures, fans have the chance to win a signed shirt at the end of the season. The more fixtures you pledge for the more times you are entered into the draw!
Other amazing prizes are also up for grabs for anybody taking part in Green Football Weekend, including a men’s signed England shirt, tickets to Premier League Games, a voucher for a National Trust holiday cottage, tickets to the Football Supporters Association Awards, Football Manager 23 game codes and BT Sport App passes.
Matt Hargreaves, Facilities Manager at Burnley FC said: “At the Club, we are passionate that if every member of staff and supporter can do one thing to support sustainability, collectively as a football community we can make a big difference.
“We are proud to support Green Football Weekend to help tackle climate change, and we encourage Clarets fans to get involved and together reduce our carbon footprint.”
It is estimated 23 out of the 92 Football League clubs in the UK can expect total or partial annual flooding of their stadiums by 2050. UK football fans making small changes to their habits could make a huge difference:
· If the UK’s 31 million football fans buy second-hand or vintage clothes rather than new, they would save the same amount of carbon as planting 43.3 million trees per year.
· If they reduced their shower length to four minutes, they would save carbon equivalent to planting 58.9 million trees per year.
· Fans can also save money by making small changes. By turning down the thermostat by one degree, reducing shower time to four minutes and eating veggie two days per week, they could reduce their household bill by up to £728.
