We have finished 2021 in an improved position in the newly released Premier League Environmental Sustainability Matrix (2021), organised by Sports Positive Leagues.
The organisation collaborated with all 20 English Premier League football clubs to understand the work they are conducting around environmental sustainability and the reduction of their carbon footprint.
Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur top the green league on 23 points, with the Clarets climbing the table to 14th place, having previously ranked 19th last year.
The higher place finish further highlights the Club’s progress around sustainability having implemented a number of environmental initiatives over the course of the last year, including being crowned winners of Planet Super League in the summer, a programme of installing LED lights, water use reduction strategies and the establishment by fans of @SustainClarets, the ‘Sustainable Burnley FC’ supporters’ group, amongst a variety of activities. Points were awarded by the Sports Positive Leagues for policy and commitment, clean energy, energy efficiency, sustainable transport, single-use plastic reduction or removal, waste management, water efficiency, plant-based or low-carbon food, biodiversity, education, communications, and engagement.
In the submission for 2020, the Club scored 9 of 21 possible points (43%), with improvements coming in 2021 scoring 12 of 24 (50%), demonstrating that progress is being made to reduce our carbon footprint, but also that there are further initiatives that can be adopted that will further assist in this ambition.
This year the requirements for proof and evidence of what was needed, was more stringent than in previous years, as Premier League clubs are encouraged to operate in a more sustainable manner and reduce their environmental impact.
