03/02/2009 - Burnley 3 - 1 West Bromwich Albion (Turf Moor)

Steven Thompson's brace and Wade Elliott's sweet strike saw the Clarets defeat West Brom to set up a fifth round FA Cup tie with Arsenal.

Elliott volleyed home the opener just before the break, before Thompson rifled in the second of the night just seven minutes into the second-half.

Albion's Gianni Zuiverloon halved the deficit for the visitors on the hour mark, but Thompson then tapped in the third goal of the tie to book Burnley's place in the next round.

The Baggies started on the front foot and nearly took an early lead when Marc Antoine-Fortuné teed up Roman Bednar inside the area, but Brian Jensen was there to push it wide for a corner.

In a first-half of minimal chances for both sides, Burnley took the lead on the stroke of half-time when Elliott latched onto an Albion defender's header to volley in past Scott Carson from 20-yards out.

The Clarets started the second-half where they left off from the first and grabbed a second of the night, after Martin Paterson's header was blocked by Christian Kalvenes, but only into the path of Thompson to lash it home from close range.

West Brom did look to respond to going two goals down and did exactly that with half-an-hour left to play, as Zuiverloon drilled home into the bottom corner past Jensen.

Despite the away side pushing for an equaliser, the Clarets sealed the victory in the 88th minute when Robbie Blake teed up Thompson from a few yards out to slot home and book Burnley's place in the fifth round.
