12/12/2017 – Burnley 1 – 0 Stoke City (Turf Moor)
Burnley moved into fourth place in the Premier League table above Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, as substitute Ashley Barnes fired home a late winner to secure all three points against the Potters at Turf Moor.
After being introduced in the 71st minute, Barnes picked out the back of the net from just inside the area with a powerful strike from Scott Arfield’s pass to seal the win.
The visitors started brightly at a wet and windy Turf Moor, with Peter Crouch seeing his back-post effort denied by the post, before Kurt Zouma volleyed at Nick Pope from a corner.
Mame Diouf was next up to fire at goal, as the towering striker picked out the side netting, with Burnley’s first real effort on goal coming early in the second-half through Steven Defour’s 25-yard strike.
Crouch then had another chance just past the hour mark, but the former England striker could only scoop his effort over the target from close range, as the rain began to pour.
With the clock ticking down and still nothing to separate the two sides, Burnley then grabbed their winner in the 89th minute through Barnes’ effort.
Jack Cork played a lofted pass towards the area, which Barnes met and chested into the path of Arfield, who laid it back off for the forward to smash home past Jack Butland and seal the win.
