10/04/2023 – Burnley 2 - 0 Sheffield United (Turf Moor)
Burnley moved 14 points clear at the top of the Sky Bet Championship table on Easter Monday with a convincing 2-0 win over promotion rivals Sheffield United at Turf Moor.
Half-time substitute Johann Berg Gudmundsson struck twice in 10 minutes to see off the Blades and extend the Clarets' impressive unbeaten run in the league to 20 consecutive matches.
United started on the front foot at Turf Moor in a lively opening but were quickly reduced to 10 men with just 16 minutes on the clock.
Following a mix-up in defence, goalkeeper Wes Foderingham tangled with Jack Robinson and was sent off for bringing down Nathan Tella just outside the area, after the forward broke towards goal before being tripped by the former Rangers shot stopper.
With half-an-hour played, the Clarets were controlling the game comfortably and enjoying plenty of possession in search of the opening goal and looking to take advantage of the 10-man Blades.
As the first 45 minutes drew towards a close, Connor Roberts fired in a dangerous cross aiming for Barnes but there was just too much on it as it fizzled out of play.
In stoppage time Jordan Beyer then saw his rifled effort from 30-yards tipped just over the crossbar by Adam Davies, who replaced Foderingham between the sticks.
Vincent Kompany turned to his bench at the break introducing the attacking duo of Manuel Benson and Gudmundsson for Lyle Foster and Jack Cork and Benson was straight into the action and came close to the opener when the wideman rippled the side netting with a stinging effort from outside the box.
Ashley Barnes was then next in on the action after seeing his back-heeled flick from Gudmundsson's corner sail just wide of the post.
The constant pressure paid off then on the hour when Tella’s cushioned header at the back post fell kindly into the path of Gudmundsson, who fired home first-time past Davies into the bottom corner.
Just 10 minutes later the home side doubled their lead as Gudmundsson struck again, this time drilling it in from close range, with the pair of goals sealing the three points.
