06/12/2008 – Sheffield United 2 – 3 Burnley (Bramall Lane)

Burnley continued their fine form and came out on top in a five-goal thriller in Sheffield, with the Clarets taking all three points back to Lancashire.

Martin Paterson gave the Clarets the lead, before James Beattie equalised from the penalty spot shortly after to draw the scores level, but Burnley were then back in front just before the break through Graham Alexander's spot-kick.

Chris Eagles added a third for the visitors with just over 10 minutes left on the clock, with United's Stephen Quinn clawing a goal back in the 87th minute.

The Clarets started brightly at Bramall Lane and had a couple of early sights on goal, with Joey Gudjonsson and Eagles both going for goal but firing wide of the target.

Billy Sharp then struck an effort wide of the post, before Quinn saw his strike from outside the area caught by Brian Jensen in the Burnley goal.

Just before the midway mark of the first-half, the away side broke the deadlock, as Wade Elliott's corner fell kindly to Paterson to hammer home into the bottom corner from close range to give the Clarets the lead.

The Blades looked to respond to going a goal down and came close twice through Beattie's low drilled effort and Matt Killgallon's header, before eventually grabbing the equaliser 10 minutes before half-time.

United striker Billy Sharp was adjudged to have been fouled by Jensen, with a spot-kick awarded and Beattie was there to step-up and draw the scores level.

However, with only three minutes left of the half, Burnley were back ahead through Alexander's penalty, after Eagles was brought down by Gary Naysmith.

The visitors came out on front foot in the second-half and had a couple of opportunities on goal through Eagles and Paterson, with Beattie coming close to equalising with a header.

Burnley did add a third of the afternoon with the game drawing to a close, as Eagles broke down the left and cut inside to unleash a strike from 25-yards out into the corner of the goal.

Quinn pulled a goal back for the Blades with just three minutes left on the clock, as the Clarets managed to hold on and ensure all three points.
