28/12/1999 – Burnley 3 – 2 Oxford United (Turf Moor)
Andy Payton’s hat-trick saw the Clarets take all three points in a five-goal thriller, as Burnley came from behind twice to defeat the U’s at Turf Moor.
United took an early lead through Steve Anthrobus, before the hosts replied through Payton’s spot-kick midway through the first-half.
Oxford regained the lead seven minutes into the second-half as Phil Whelan fired home, but two late strikes from Payton in the final 10 minutes saw the Clarets secure the win.
The visitors started brightly in Lancashire and snatched an early lead when Les Robinson’s ball into the area fell into the path of Anthrobus, who took a touch to bring it down and picked out the top corner.

Burnley came close to equalising when Steve Davis met Dean West’s corner, but the centre-back saw his crashing header tipped over the goal by Andre Arendse.
However, midway though the first-half the Clarets did have their equaliser. John Mullin was lining-up an effort on goal, but the midfielder was brought down inside the box and Payton was there to step-up and slam home the spot-kick.
With the half-time score level at a goal apiece, Oxford started the second-half just as they had started the first, as Phil Whelan powered home a header from close range to put the away side back in front in the 52nd minute.
Stan Ternent made a double change five minutes later and it was one of the substitutes Ronnie Jepson who came inches close to equalising on the hour mark, but the forward could only head just over the crossbar from Glen Little’s corner.

The Clarets began to apply the pressure on the U’s and their persistence paid off with 10 minutes left on the clock, as Little worked his magic to tee up Paul Weller, who fired a low cross into the area for Payton to turn home and pull the scores level.
Nine minutes later, Burnley had their winning goal when Mitchell Thomas’ header was blocked on the line but fell kindly to Payton to stab home from a couple of yards out and ensure the three points were going the Clarets’ way.
