17/12/2022 – Burnley 3 - 1 Middlesbrough (Turf Moor)
Manuel Benson was the star of the show against Middlesbrough, as the Clarets came from behind to win 3-1 and continue their fine form in the Sky Bet Championship.
The Belgian winger played an unfortunate part in Boro’s opener as Duncan Watmore fired home, before then grabbing a brace in the space of seven minutes in the second half. Captain Jonny Howson then added salt to the wounds for the away side, glancing home an own goal late on.
Following a quiet start at Turf Moor, the hosts were enjoying plenty of possession across the opening 20 minutes, constantly looking to unlock a stubborn Boro defence.
The first real chance for Burnley came midway through the first-half, when Ian Maatsen drove towards the box and picked out Benson, who could only fire over the target from the edge of the box.
With half-time approaching, the visitors broke on the counter, with Isaiah Jones racing down the right wing and Chuba Akpom & Riley McGree inside the area, but the full-back's cross was well blocked by Taylor Harwood-Bellis.

There was a late chance for Josh Brownhill inside first-half stoppage time, but the midfielder's effort sailed over the crossbar, with the two teams heading into the break goalless.
Following a quiet first-half in terms of opportunities, Boro got their nose in front just four minutes into the second half, when Benson's attempt at keeping the ball in play was latched onto by Watmore, who made no mistake of breaking into the area and slotting past Aro Muric.
That lead only lasted just over 10 minutes, as the Clarets equalised through Benson's strike. Jordan Beyer picked out the forward with a delightful pass, before the Belgian cut inside just outside the area and found the bottom corner on the hour mark.
Just seven minutes later, Burnley had their deserved second goal, as Benson this time saw his looping cross find the far corner of the goal beating a stranded Zack Steffen.
The afternoon then got even worse for Michael Carrick's men, as skipper Howson headed in an own goal from a Brownhill cross to ensure defeat for Boro.
There was time for a late penalty in stoppage time for the away side, but Akpom's spot-kick was saved by the hands of Muric, just before the full-time whistle was blown.
