14/01/2012 – Middlesbrough 0 – 2 Burnley (Riverside Stadium)

Burnley continued their impressive form with a seventh win from nine games, after goals from Jay Rodriguez and Kieran Trippier gave the visitors all three points in Teesside and moved the Clarets to within a point of the play-off places.

Rodriguez opened the scoring in the sixth minute at the Riverside Stadium, before Trippier doubled Burnley's lead with a strike from distance.

Eddie Howe's side started brightly and won an early corner with just four minutes played, which is where the opening goal came from.

A well-worked set-piece routine saw Ross Wallace's corner dummied by David Edgar, before Rodriguez met it on the edge of the area and fired home first-time past Boro goalkeeper Connor Ripley for his 14th goal of the campaign.

The Clarets came close to a second goal of the afternoon when Martin Paterson drilled an effort just wide of the post, before Dean Marney then saw his fizzing volley from outside the box drag wide.

Rodriguez wasn't far off bagging another goal with his half-volley sailing just off target, but with the game approaching the half-hour mark, Burnley did grab their second.

A throw-in into the Boro box could only be cleared into the path of Trippier and the right-back brought the ball down perfectly, before unleashing a strike from 35-yards out into the back of the net to extend the lead.

The away side were on top against the promotion-chasing Middlesbrough, but it was the Clarets who came close once again on the hour mark when Rodriguez saw his effort just off target.

Lee Grant was forced into action with a few minutes left on the clock to keep out Tony McMahon's shot and ensure the three points returned to Turf Moor.
