An in-depth look back at a previous encounter between the Clarets & the Hatters

05/11/2005 – Luton Town 2 – 3 Burnley (Kenilworth Road)

An impressive Ade Akinbiyi hat-trick secured all three points for the 10-men Clarets at Luton in a five-goal thriller.

Burnley started strongly at Kenilworth Road and had an early opener when Akinbiyi raced through the defensive duo of Leon Barnett and Paul Underwood, before sliding the ball past goalkeeper Marlon Beresford to give the visitors the lead.

Just 15 minutes later the Clarets had a second, as Akinbiyi latched onto a long ball over the Hatters’ defence and his pace & power saw the striker reach the ball first once again before unleashing a first-time hit into the roof of the net on the half-volley.

Luton had a great opportunity to pull a goal back with half-time approaching when Warren Feeney curled an effort wide of the post and shortly after the away side were then down to 10, as goalkeeper Brian Jensen was shown a red card for handling outside the area.

John Spicer went in goal for the Clarets and with half-time only two minutes away, the lead was halved as Steve Howard headed home from a corner for Town.

Despite the hosts having the momentum going into the break, Burnley came out on the front foot in the second half and Akinbiyi worked his magic once again, after bursting into the area and being hacked down by Barnett, the referee awarded a spot-kick which the forward stepped up and slammed home to seal his hat-trick.

Although Feeney clawed a goal back for Luton with half-an-hour left to play, the Clarets went on to hold on for a victory and take all three points back to Lancashire.
