21/09/2013 – Leeds United 1 – 2 Burnley (Elland Road)
Burnley moved up to second place in the Championship table with a 2-1 win over Leeds at Elland Road.
The Clarets were two goals ahead at the break through Scott Arfield and Sam Vokes, before United substitute Matt Smith headed home with 10 minutes to go.
The away side started bright in Yorkshire and had an early opportunity on goal when Arfield teed up Vokes inside the area, the Welshman’s strike was on target but was palmed away by Paddy Kenny.
However, the Clarets did have their opener in the 18th minute, when Trippier’s cross into the area fell to Arfield at the far-post and the midfielder found his feet and fired home.
There was a chance for Leeds to respond shortly after when Tonge picked out Luke Varney inside the box, who turned and fired at goal but Heaton was equal to it.
But with just three minutes until half-time Burnley had their second, as Vokes latched onto Michael Kightly’s cross and after seeing his initial header saved, the striker made no mistake with the follow-up and hammered home.
Although the visitors led comfortably at the break, Leeds came out on the front foot in the second half and came close to pulling a goal back when El-Hadji Diouf met Aidy White’s cross, but Heaton was there to make a remarkable stop to deny the forward.
The hosts had another effort to half the deficit when Varney struck a back-heel just wide of the post, before Smith then crashed home a header from Diouf’s free-kick to set-up a nervy final 10 minutes in Leeds.
Substitute Dom Poleon had a chance to equalise with the clock ticking, but the young striker’s effort sailed wide of the target from outside the area.
