13/04/2019 – Burnley 2 – 0 Cardiff City (Turf Moor)
The Clarets took a huge step towards Premier League survival with a huge 2-0 win over Cardiff City at a packed-out Turf Moor.
A goal from Chris Wood in either half saw Burnley move 11 points clear of the relegation zone, with only a month left of the 2018/19 campaign.
The home side started strongly and came agonisingly close to opening the scoring with just 90 seconds on the clock, as Wood planted a well-timed header against the inside of the post.
Cardiff grew into the game and created a couple of opportunities of their own when Josh Murphy had two attempts in the space of three minutes, but Clarets shot-stopper Tom Heaton had them both covered.
However, with half-an-hour played in the crucial fixture, the Clarets broke the deadlock after goalkeeper Neil Etheridge did well to initially keep out Ashley Westwood’s strike, the following Dwight McNeil corner saw Wood power home a header unmarked from inside the box to give Burnley the lead.
With the Clarets ahead at the break, City came out on the front foot in the second 45 and had a chance to claw things level when Harry Arter’s effort rattled the crossbar.
Before Kenneth Zohore then teed up Junior Hoilett inside the area to finish from close range but the forward’s effort sailed well over the target.
Those missed opportunities came back to haunt the visitors in stoppage time as the Clarets doubled their lead and claimed all three points in the final few moments.
McNeil worked his magic down the left before skipping past Gunnarsson and picking out Wood to guide home from a few yards out.
