03/05/2009 – Burnley 4 - 0 Bristol City (Turf Moor)
A brace from Graham Alexander and strikes from Wade Elliott & Joey Guðjónsson saw the Clarets cement a place in the Championship play-offs on the final day of the 2008/09 campaign.
Alexander opened the scoring from the penalty spot on a sunny afternoon at Turf Moor, before Elliott then doubled Burnley’s lead with an effort from 25-yards out.
The Scotsman then made no mistake from 12-yards once again in the second-half, with substitute Guðjónsson rounding off the scoring in the 86th minute.
Burnley started brightly and came close to an early opener when Clarke Carlisle glanced a header over the crossbar, before Chris McCann forced City goalkeeper Adriano Basso into action to keep his stinging shot away.
Owen Coyle’s side kept up the pressure and Chris Eagles was next up to try and break the deadlock, but his effort rattled the crossbar, before Bristol’s first real attack on goal saw Nicky Maynard find the back of the net, however it was ruled out for offside.
A dominant first-half display then paid off just before the break, as Elliott was fouled inside the area and Alexander stepped up to fire home the opener from the spot.
With only a minute left of the half, Elliott then struck home a second of the afternoon, with a strike from outside the area taking a deflection into the back of the net past Basso.
City failed to gather any real momentum or pressure and it was Burnley who added a third to put the game out sight with just over 20 minutes left on the clock, as Bradley Orr handled inside the box, Alexander was there to slot home the spot-kick once again.
As the game drew towards a close with a play-off semi-final tie with Reading on the horizon, Guðjónsson then turned home a fourth of the game after pouncing on a parried save from Basso.
