Tuesday 8th March marks International Women’s Day: celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.
This year’s theme ‘Break The Bias’ encourages everybody to take action and level the playing field, calling for a gender-equal world.
To recognise the theme, we launched a series of activities as part of the Club’s ongoing ‘Celebrating Women’ campaign, which includes increasing gender visibility and encouraging female role models from across the organisation to come together to inspire and celebrate one another.
The International Women’s Day activities kicked off with Burnley FC Women’s representation across the Burnley v Chelsea fixture at Turf Moor last weekend.
Captain and Goalkeeper Lauren Bracewell joined Phil Bird on co-commentary and players Olivia Wilson and Nicola Worthington were joined by Burnley FC Academy U23s Dara Costelloe and Joel Connolly, for a signing in the Clarets Store before the game.
The players signed items and posed for photographs with supporters, with the academy players joining the women’s players in a show of solidarity for the campaign.
Burnley FC Women players, Megan Dykes, Sarah Agger, Danielle Cooper, and Courtney Willis, also made an appearance in the FanZone at the game, taking part in the Beat the Keeper inflatable game and meeting children who had taken part in Burnley FC in the Community’s matchday coaching package.
The celebrations continued at Burnley FC Women’s home game against Wolves Women FC on Sunday.
Burnley FC U16s, U14s and Barnoldswick Town Girls U12s took part in a meet and greet with the women’s team after their 3-0 victory over the West Midlands side in a true celebration of women’s sport.
Joining forces from across Burnley FC and Burnley FC in the Community female staff members further teamed up to reflect on their career journey, share details about their current job roles and inspire others to break the bias.
Women in the workplace is short video series which will be shared across all social media platforms this week as part of an ongoing ‘Celebrating Women’ campaign, promoting the different career paths that are available across Burnley FC.
Some of the staff members sharing their story include Suzanne Scott (First Team Sport Scientist), Veronica Simpson (Club Reception), Ellie Saunders (Academy Nutrition Intern), Tasha Afrifa (Academy Education Tutor), Paulina Rodriguez (Partnership Activations Executive), Caitlin Walker (Premier League Kicks & Disability Football Coach, Burnley FC in the Community) and Dr Sara Ward (CEO of Burnley FC in the Community).
This year’s International Women’s Day theme ‘Break the Bias,’ focusses on raising awareness against bias, smashing stereotypes, breaking inequality, and tackling discrimination associated to women.
Whether deliberate or unconscious, bias can make it difficult for women to move ahead in life. Individually we can break the bias in our communities, in our workplace, schools, colleges and universities. Together, we can all show our commitment to forging women’s equality and collectively we can all #BreakTheBias.
Burnley FC and Burnley FC in the Community embrace equal opportunities for all and are a disability confident employer. Burnley FC fully support the FA Football Leadership Diversity Code as we work towards creating and supporting a diverse and gender inclusive workforce.
