Burnley’s Carabao Cup campaign came to an end on Tuesday night, as a much-changed Clarets side suffered a 2-1 defeat against the Bluebirds.

Joel Colwill gave Cardiff the lead at Turf Moor on the half-hour mark, before Callum Robinson then made it two shortly after.

The hosts did pull a goal back through Zian Flemming’s well-taken strike in the second-half, but despite efforts to draw the scores level, the away side held on to book their place in the next round.

Head Coach Scott Parker made 11 changes to the starting line-up from the side that drew with Nottingham Forest at the weekend.

Amongst the changes, there was a first start for the Clarets handed to defender Axel Tuanzebe, after recovering from injury.

The Bluebirds started bright in the cup tie, with striker Callum Robinson flashing a shot just wide of the target from 20-yards out.

Burnley’s first real chance on goal came midway through the first-half in a quiet opening, as Zian Flemming saw his close-range strike blocked by the body of Callum Chambers.

However, it was the visitors who took the lead just before the half-hour mark, after a corner was cleared away, but only to the edge of the area for it to be recycled back into the box for Colwill to slide home the opener from a couple of yards out.

The Clarets did look to respond instantly, as Armando Broja beat the offside trap and raced through on goal, but saw his effort denied by the legs of Nathan Trott.

It was Cardiff who struck again though five minutes after their first goal, as Rubin Colwill worked his way into the box and squared it across the face of goal for Robinson to steer home the second of the night for the away side.

Parker’s team looked to react to going two goals down, when Hannibal tried his luck from range, but his stinging drive sailed just wide of the post, with that chance being the final of the first-half.

Burnley did come close to pulling a goal back seven minutes into the second-half, as Marcus Edwards cut inside onto his left foot and wrapped an effort just wide of the target.

However, the Clarets did get their goal just moments after that, when Edwards intercepted Trott’s pass out from the back and teed up Flemming, who curled the ball into the corner of the net with a lovely finish from outside the area.

The hosts were on the front foot and came close to an equaliser just past the hour, when Edwards was involved again, but the forward just couldn’t get a shot off in time before being challenged inside the box.

Cardiff were not sitting back though and created another opportunity in the 70th minute, but Colwill’s strike skimmed just wide of the goal from close range.

With just over 10 minutes on the clock left, Parker made further changes with Ashley Barnes and Mike Tresor replacing Broja and Edwards.

Despite the Clarets pushing to get back into the cup tie and Tresor coming close to an equaliser minutes after coming on, City held on secure their place in the fourth-round draw.
