As a long season comes to an end, U21s defender Murray Campbell has emphasised just how much Monday night’s trip to AFC Bournemouth means to him and his teammates.

The young Clarets travel to Vitality Stadium for a 7pm kick-off, with a place in the national Professional Development League final at stake.

“Everyone’s looking forward to it and is excited," he said.

“It’s a big game and these are the games that mean the most, so hopefully we can get the win on Monday and look forward to a final.

“Winning at Cardiff City on the final day definitely helps. If you’re on that winning streak you just want to keep going and playing well.

“A win would mean a lot – the whole season’s come down to this point really so it would be huge for us.”

It’s been a hugely successful campaign for Andy Farrell’s side, who finished 2nd in the North section of the league with 59 points from a possible 93.

Additionally, the young Clarets reached the semi-finals of the Premier League Cup with an impressive run that included victories over Category One sides Sunderland and Chelsea.

Campbell, who joined the club from Scottish Premiership side St Mirren in September 2023, has played a big role in the team’s performances this season.

Still just 18, the centre-back has made 28 appearances in all competitions, with 18 of those coming in the league.

Had it not have been for loans to National League North side Chorley and Northern Premier League outfit Warrington Rylands, the Scot would likely have been an ever present.

Reflecting on 2024/25, Campbell continued: “Personally I feel like I’ve had a good season.

“I managed to get quite a few senior games under my belt at Chorley and Warrington Rylands.

“Being around men is a lot different to U21s and U18s. In game, the defensive side of my game came on a lot because it’s a completely different way of playing.

“As an U21s team here at Burnley I think we’ve done really well, beating most teams in the league and getting far in the Premier League Cup before being unlucky against QPR.”

Monday night’s match won’t be the first time Farrell’s team have travelled to Vitality Stadium this season.

The Cherries were the opponents for our third game of the campaign back in August, with Charlie Veevers and Brandon Ly both on target.

That wasn’t enough to bring any points back to Lancashire though, with Jonny Stuttle and Ben Winterburn both netting before Jonny Day won it with virtually the last kick.

Campbell played 90 minutes that day and finished by looking back on the occasion, before discussing what kind of impact a healthy crowd could have on Monday night.

He said: “It was roasting!

“I personally thought we were the better team but we weren’t able to take our chances as well as we would've liked.

“We conceded two goals late on which gave them the win, but if we produce a similar performance to that this time around we’ll have a good chance.

“Once you’re on the pitch you don’t really notice it (a crowd) as much. Everybody just needs to be prepared and do what we usually do.”
