Clarets set for last eight tie this weekend

The stage is set for an FA Women’s National League Cup quarter-final between Burnley and Stoke City at Turf Moor on Saturday.

It is a match between two teams who are familiar with each other, having been in the same division for several years.

The Clarets recorded a comprehensive victory over the Potters in the league earlier this season, with Laura Elford netting a brace alongside further strikes from Charley Docherty, Anna Grey and Aimee Kelly.

Nelson FC’s Daisy Communications Arena was the venue as the Clarets swept their fourth-tier opposition aside.

The floodgates opened after Elford broke the deadlock in the 8th minute and the striker went on score a hat-trick, while Bella Reidford, Kelly, and Docherty also found the back of the net.

Because of the result, Sawiuk’s side progressed to the main cup competition rather than the plate.

Sutton Coldfield Town 0-1 Burnley | First Round | Sunday 29th September

Then came a much closer game scoreline wise against Sutton Coldfield Town but, in truth, Burnley dominated proceedings.

The only goal came with 22 minutes on the clock when Sutton defender Sarah Lampitt turned the ball into her own net.

Hull City 0-1 Burnley | Second Round | Sunday 20th October

Hull City were the opponents in the last 16 of the competition and the Clarets were able to replicate the 1-0 victory of the previous round.

After a sustained period of pressure defender Naomi Hartley scored the decisive goal just before the hour, rising highest to head a Grace Palmer free-kick in off the post.

That was a sixth straight victory and third clean sheet in all competitions at the time, and Sawiuk’s side will be keen to produce a similarly steely performance against the Potters.
