Burnley Women earned a crack at Manchester United in the FA Cup following a dramatic penalty shoot-out win against Sunderland.
Following a goalless 120 minutes, captain and goalkeeper Lauren Bracewell was the hero with three stunning penalty saves as the Clarets won 3-1 in the third-round tie at Padiham.
And that sets up the biggest date in Burney Women’s short history as Matt Bee’s side face a Women’s Super League outfit for the first time this Sunday in a mouthwatering fourth round tie, just hours before the men also face United in the Premier League.
Bee, Burnley FC Women's Manager, said: “I’m immensely proud of everybody connected with the team.
"We weren’t at our best but we dug in for each other and our togetherness got us through.
“Sunday is a huge moment for this club now and it shows our progress in such a short space of time, stepping out against a side like Manchester United Women.
"They are having a great season in the Super League so we know the task facing us. We have to seize this moment and attack it with no fear.”
In a nervy encounter Sunderland had the better of the limited chances, with Bracewell saving well from Abbey Joice and Emily Scarr.
The Clarets, who had beaten Fylde in round two with a late penalty, also had a let off when Keira Ramshaw rose up high and headed just wide from a corner. And after Bracewell again kept parity when she tipped over a Scarr free kick, Sunderland were a whisker away from opening the scoring as Ramshaw hit the crossbar.
The second half became much tighter as the half progressed, with Burnley’s beat chance coming when Nic Worthington fired over.
And with extra time failing to separate the sides, a nervy penalty shoot-out went the way of the hosts.
Cara Bickett and Katie Thomas scored their first two for Burnley, and after Scarr had netted for the visitors, Bracewell made the first of her trio of saves, clawing away Jessica Brown’s effort.
Worthington’s shot hit the bar to keep nerves jangling, but Bracewell again denied Grace McCatty.
And after Megan Dykes found the top corner for Burnley, Bracewell made another fantastic save to deny Louise Griffiths and seal the 3-1 win and a fourth round spot for the season successive season.
