George Boyd admits he still ‘loves watching it back’ when talking about that sublime strike in the memorable 1-0 win in the Premier League against Manchester City at Turf Moor in 2015.
Boyd’s effort in the second half against the league champions proved to be the winner against Manuel Pellegrini’s side as the Clarets edged closer to escaping the bottom three and stands as the last time Burnley beat City.
The goal came as Kieran Trippier’s dangerous free kick into the area was cleared away by former City skipper and current Clarets boss Vincent Kompany into the path of Boyd, who connected sweetly first time on the edge of the area to find the bottom corner past Joe Hart and give Burnley an astounding lead.
The former Scotland international has fond memories of that goal: “I don’t actually remember too much of the goal it as it fell to me, I was always on the edge of the area praying for something like that to fall to me and hopefully get a good connection.

“To see it then go into the bottom corner was just an unbelievable feeling and I still love watching it today. It really was a special night.”
Speaking to Burnleyfootballclub.com, Boyd added: “The atmosphere was unreal. I always say that the atmosphere that night was the best I’ve ever played with. As soon as the goal went in, I have never heard noise like it.
“It was a huge three points for us, they were the champions and we needed the win as well being in a relegation fight it made it even better for us.”
City’s illustrious line-up on that night included the likes of club legend Kompany, Yaya Toure, Sergio Aguero, David Silva and Joe Hart.

Boyd admits that heading into the game, it was described as a ‘free hit’ and that the target was to just make the visitors as uncomfortable as possible at Turf Moor.
The 37-year-old explained: “I remember before the game saying this is like a free hit for us, nobody expected us to get anything from that game.
“The message was ‘go out there and express yourselves’ which I think we always did against the big teams, we never got battered or anything like that.
“The aim was to make them uncomfortable, hit the diags up to Barnesy and see what we can do from it. I think the atmosphere helped us massively too and the crowd getting behind the team played in our advantage.”

As the 2023/24 Premier League season approaches, Boyd is excited to see the Clarets in action and has a certain eye on Burnley’s No.19.
“I’m really excited for this season. I think the style of play Burnley have now will suit the Premier League more than in the Championship.
“More time on the ball, playing out from the back they won’t get pressed as much and I hope the young players and new signings can really express themselves on the big stage.
“I was most impressed with Anass Zaroury last season, I really think he has all the attributes to shine in this league. He’s in my Fantasy Premier League team too, so hopefully he gets some goals and assists!”
George will be joining Phil Bird on Clarets+ as co-commentator for Friday night's clash with Manchester City.
